How EFL Learners Speak English Fluently
How EFL Learners Speak English Fluently
By (Mehrdad Sabir)
English is a global
language that many people want to learn for various reasons. However, learning
a new language can be challenging, especially when it comes to speaking
fluently. Speaking fluently means that you can communicate effectively and
confidently in English, without having to pause or repeat yourself too often.
It also means that you can use the appropriate words, grammar, and
pronunciation for different situations.
So, how can ESL learners
achieve fluency in English? There is no magic formula, but there are some tips
and tricks that can help you improve your speaking skills and reach your language
goals. In this blog post, I will share five of them with you.
1. Speak English as much as possible
The most important thing
you can do to improve your fluency is to practice speaking English as often as
you can. The more you speak the more comfortable and confident you will become.
You will also learn from your mistakes and improve your vocabulary and grammar.
There are many ways to
find opportunities to speak English, even if you do not live in an
English-speaking country. For example, you can:
- Join a language exchange program or app and chat with
native speakers or other learners.
- Take online classes with a professional English tutor
who can give you feedback and guidance.
- Watch English movies, TV shows, or podcasts and repeat
what you hear.
- Talk to yourself in English and narrate your daily
activities.
2. Learn phrases, not just words
One of the common
mistakes that ESL learners make is to focus too much on individual words and
not enough on phrases. Phrases are groups of words that have a specific meaning
and function in a sentence. For example, “How are you?” is a phrase that is
used to greet someone and ask about his or her well-being.
Learning phrases can
help you speak more fluently because you do not have to think about each word
separately. You can also use phrases to express yourself more clearly and
naturally. For example, instead of saying, “I like it very much”, you can say
“I love it” or “It’s awesome”.
To learn phrases, you
can:
- Read and listen to authentic English materials, such as
books, articles, podcasts, or videos, and pay attention to how words are
combined.
- Write down or memorize phrases that are useful or
interesting to you, and try to use them in your own sentences.
- Learn phrases that are related to specific topics or
situations, such as hobbies, travel, or work.
3. Learn intonation, body language, and gestures
Speaking fluently is about
not only what you say, but also how you say it. Intonation, body language, and
gestures are important aspects of communication that can affect the meaning and
tone of your message. For example, raising your voice at the end of a sentence
can indicate a question, while nodding your head can show agreement or
understanding.
Learning intonation,
body language, and gestures can help you speak more fluently because you can:
- Add variety and expression to your speech and avoid
sounding monotonous or boring.
- Show your emotions and attitudes and make your speech
more engaging and persuasive.
- Understand the context and nuances of what other people
are saying and respond appropriately.
To learn intonation,
body language, and gestures, you can:
- Watch and imitate native speakers or other fluent
speakers and observe how they use their voice, face, and hands to convey
their message.
- Record yourself speaking and listen to how you sound
and look. Try to improve your intonation, body language, and gestures by
adjusting your pitch, volume, speed, facial expressions, and movements.
- Practice speaking in front of a mirror or a camera and
get feedback from others.
4. Think in English, not in your native language
Another common mistake
that ESL learners make is to think in their native language and then translate
it into English. This can slow down your speaking and make you sound unnatural
or awkward. It can also lead to errors in vocabulary, grammar, or
pronunciation, as some words or structures may not have a direct equivalent in
English.
Thinking in English can
help you speak more fluently because you can:
- Save time and energy and avoid unnecessary pauses or
hesitations.
- Use the words and structures that are appropriate for
English and avoid literal translations.
- Develop a better sense of the English language and its
logic and patterns.
To think in English, you
can:
- Try to use English as much as possible in your daily
life, such as writing notes, making lists, or setting reminders.
- Switch your phone, computer, or other devices to
English and use English apps, websites, or games.
- Imagine conversations or scenarios in English and
practice what you would say or do.
5. Set realistic and specific goals
The last tip I have for
you is to set realistic and specific goals for your English speaking. Having
goals can help you stay motivated and focused on your progress and
achievements. However, your goals should be realistic and specific, meaning
that they should be achievable and measurable. For example, instead of saying,
“I want to speak English fluently”, you can say, “I want to give a 10-minute
presentation in English without using notes”.
Setting realistic and
specific goals can help you speak more fluently because you can:
- Plan your learning activities and strategies according
to your needs and interests.
- Track your improvement and identify your strengths and
weaknesses.
- Celebrate your success and reward yourself for your
efforts.
To set realistic and
specific goals, you can:
- Assess your current level and skills and decide what
you want to improve or learn.
- Break down your goals into smaller and manageable steps
and set a deadline for each one.
- Review your goals regularly and adjust them if necessary.
Speaking English fluently is a challenging but rewarding goal that many EFL learners have. It requires a lot of practice, patience, and perseverance, but it is not impossible. By following the tips and tricks I shared in this blog post, you can improve your speaking skills and become more confident and fluent in English. Remember, the key is to speak as much as possible, learn phrases, use intonation, body language, and gestures, think in English, and set realistic and specific goals.
